Side Views: New York State of Mind

Watching the various documentaries on TV on the tenth anniversary of 9-11, I somehow felt connected. Not that I witnessed the tragedy, but because of my admiration and respect for The City.  I had a chance to visit NYC for the first time five years after 9-11 and one can't help but feel the city's tenacity and never give up attitude. I remember the immense pride among the locals for their city. And its many heroes during that tragic day. The home of New York's Finest, and the brave ordinary citizens who stood up against terrorism. The mood when I was there was upbeat and optimistic, but you can also sense that The City will never forget. 

And I also remember the food. The oysters and chowder at the Grand Central Station and the huge Beef Tongue sandwiches at Katz's Diner, the Fish and Chips at A Salt and Battery and many others...and I regret, to this day, not bringing my camera along to photograph these great meals. Walking through The City's streets, and getting lost, I did bring my camera along and took some photos. I hope you like them.

Clearly, a culinary capital of the world. And you find and feel The City's pride in its rich food heritage everywhere, from upscale establishments to small family businesses. It is a city rising from tragedy, refusing to surrender, and a city that will not forget. New York, at least for me, best represents the triumph of the human will and spirit. My hats off to The Big Apple. You will forever have my respect and admiration.
