Side Views: Mount St. Helens

Almost two years after this trip, I still can't help but feel awed by the power and beauty of Mount St. Helens. Getting the 4x4 rental stuck in the deep snow and being helped by some locals, and body flopping on the snow while no one was lookng...awesome.

It was off-season, and the weathers wasn't expected to clear up, but somehow it did. And without the usual crowds, you have the whole park to yourself. Very cool. Until your 4x4 rental gets stuck in the snow...

Luckily, I got some help from a few locals, and I was out in no time. No more drifting in the snow for now...

Sticking to the plowed out roads, I ended up at the reservoir. A sudden calmness took over, with only a slight breeze to remind you that what lies before you isn't a picture frame.

A nice walk around the reservoir almost feels spiritual, when the only footprints on the snow are yours alone...

Driving back up the main road, be sure to have a last look, and another...

The stillness and beauty of the park during the off-season is all yours, quite an experience.

Don't let the off-season prevent you from exploring the park, but temper the urge to drift your 4x4 on the snow if travelling alone. And pack some food and beverages too, just in case you decide to stay a little longer, and I wouldn't blame you if you do.
