Manang's Chicken: Bringing Home Cooking to Fast Food

Sisters Jill Gerodias-Borja and Jen Gerodias-Slagle have long enjoyed a special chicken dish served at home prepared by their long time family cook, affectionately called Manang. Based on their mom's recipe, the crisp and tender chicken dish with its soy garlic sauce remained a family secret. Until now.

After some positive and encouraging results in food fairs and weekend markets, Jill and Jen opened their first branch in 2011, aptly named Manang's Chicken, sharing their family's double deep fried crispy chicken with Manang's secret soy garlic sauce (check out my previous post on Manang's Chicken here at http://dude4food.blogspot.com/2012/04/manangs-chicken-take-out.html). Now with seven branches in the Metro, Jill and Jen are offering two new products to their line up. I was recently invited to sample and be one of the first to try the new products, so read on...

Manang's Chicken's popular chips were served generously during the event, a sure sign of good things to come.

Crisp, thick cut chips from all-natural potatoes. And it just kept coming. Yup, I was one happy dude...

Lightly salted, not too oily, big on the crunch. A perfect side to Manang's crispy chicken. And finally, the new products were introduced...

The Ultimate Crispy Chicken Sandwich (P 109 Solo, P 135 with chips and a drink), crisp chicken fillet brushed with Manang's signature soy garlic sauce with coleslaw on a kaiser bun.

The trademark crispness and the sweet, tangy flavor of the soy garlic sauce is nicely complemented by the rich coleslaw, great combo of flavors.

And the chicken fillet stays crisp, bursting with the soy garlic flavor in every bite. Great contrasting textures, bold flavors, a perfect addition to their product line. And then dessert...

The Velvet Sundae (P 45), with a moist velvety cake on the bottom topped with fudge covered vanilla ice cream, a delicious twist on the usual sundae.

The smooth vanilla ice cream, the crunch of the choco chips, the rich fudge and the soft moist cake all combine for one really cool treat.

And the timing couldn't have been more perfect, another refreshingly cool way to beat the summer heat.

Jill, President and CEO, doing a quick demo in preparing the new Velvet Sundae.

Jen, COO and the creative genius in the kitchen, doing the finishing touches on the Velvet Sundae.

Good food, great value. Jill and Jen definitely have some winners here, as the amazing Manang's Chicken's story continues to unfold. And you can expect more good things to come from Jill and Jen. And I'm pretty sure Manang would be proud.

Manang's Chicken is located at Lansbergh Place, Tomas Morato, Quezon City or call 376-5058 for inquiries and details on other branch locations. You can also check out Manang's Chicken's website at www.manang's chicken.com.

  1. This was a great read! Smart of them to start small with food fairs and markts, that is a great way to test the waters before going to having a big restaurant.
The food does look amazing and you were lucky you got the invite. Well worth a second trip. Thanks for sharing this.

  3. Nothing compares to homemade treats, nothing can even come close. So if we can have homemade dishes blend with the convenience of fastfood, isn't that heaven? This is totally cool!
