You Can Always Bet on the Kurobuta Tenderloin at Tonkatsu Maisen

The popularity of authentic Japanese-style Tonkatsu has gone beyond just being a mere trend, it's now part of the metro's culinary mainstream. And you can still bet on the Kurobuta Tonkatsu of Tonkatsu Maisen.

Since it opened back in 2016, Tonkatsu Maisen has been one of the top picks for authentic Japanese-style pork tonkatsu in the metro (for more on Tonkatsu Maisen, see my earlier posts, No Compromises: A Commitment to Flavor at Tonkatsu Maisen on their launch three years ago and Pork Love at Tonkatsu Maisen). At Tonkatsu Maisen, you can still bet on their signature tonkatsu specialties. And the Kurobuta Tonkatsu is still as juicy and crisp as the day I first tried this succulent pork cutlet draped in that deep, golden brown breading...

Pork on your salad? Why not. Tonkatsu Maisen's refreshing Buta Shabu Salad (P 240) is a crisp medley of vegetables and greens topped with thin slices of tender pork, the perfect starter for your tonkatsu feast. Drizzled with a light vinaigrette and sprinkled with sesame seeds, the subtle sweetness of the garden-fresh greens come through complemented by the delicate richness of the tender pork.

Wash it all down with Tonkatsu Maisen's sweet and soothing Green Tea with Lychee (P 100/Bottomless), and you're ready for another tasty bite of the Buta Shabu Salad, preparing your palate for the main course...

The Kurobuta Tenderloin Katsu Set (P 630) served with rice, cabbage, pickle set, watermelon slices and miso soup is a complete meal in itself. But it's the Kurobuta pork cutlet that's clearly the star of the set supported by a cast of tasty sides.

That light and crisp outer layer of breading gives it that refined tonkatsu finish...

...and as you move one piece of the sliced pork to the side, the tender and juicy Kurobuta pork cutlet is slowly revealed. The audible crunch signals your first bite, followed by the savory richness of the tender and succulent Kurobuta pork. It's these contrasting textures that every diner looks for in a tonkatsu. The premium Kurobuta pork completes the experience.

The clean flavors of the kurobuta pork adds that elegant layer to your tonkatsu experience. But it's the special Kurobuta Sauce at Tonkatsu Maisen that makes the rich savory notes of the Kurobuta pork tenderloin pop out. Made from their signature Karakuchi Sauce with hints of Worcestershire as the base, the generous addition of freshly grated apples deliver a sharp fruity sweetness pairing well with the premium pork. Pork always works well with a hint of sweetness and the Kurobuta Sauce is so spot on, tempering the richness of the pork cutlet for balanced notes.

One bite of Tonkatsu Maisen's Kurobuta pork reminds you why you love a good and authentic Japanese-style tonkatsu. And years after they opened, you can still bet on Tonkatsu Maisen...
