Side Views: Awesome Sights and Flavors at the Tillamook Cheese Factory

I was surprised to find Tillamook Red Cheddar at S&R the other day, and it immediately brought back memories of my trip to Oregon almost three years ago. And when it comes to cheese, fudge and ice cream, Tillamook is definitely on my top ten list. I remember visiting the Tillamook Cheese Factory, and the sights and flavors remain one of the best memories of that trip

Just an hour and half's drive from Portland, it's a relaxed and leisurely drive. Simply set your GPS and you're on your way.

The plant receives an estimated one million visitors annually, which is not surprising. The self-guided tour format is also great, allowing you to walk through the facilities at your own pace. With interactive consoles located throughout the venue, you can explore the site without worrying about missing anything. Very cool.

The view from the second floor view deck shows a typical production run, with large blocks of cheddar ready for slicing, sorting and packing.

Seeing blocks of cheese can make you really hungry, but no worries.

A sampling station is conveniently located on the ground floor near the factory store, where you get to taste a variety of Tillamook cheese products.

After a few bites, it's quite easy to linger and just go for another round of sampling, and another...

The Factory Store is well stocked with its trademark products...

...including an impressive selection of fudge...

...and some really awesome ice cream.

After finally deciding on a flavor combo, I go for the Mudslide and Coffee Almond Fudge on a waffle bowl, a perfect treat to end the tour.

It's one awesome drive capped by some good eats, and if you find yourself in Oregon, a visit to Tillamook shouldn't be missed. Here's hoping S&R would stock more Tillamook products...
