What's in the Fridge...The Classic Grilled Cheese

"It's good," said young Percy after a bite of the grilled cheese sandwich prepared by his dad, Carl Casper played by Jon Favreau. "You bet your ass it's good" replied Carl, and it really is...

That one scene from the film, all of one minute and three seconds, was more than enough to make you hit the pause button and head for the fridge to create your own grilled cheese sandwich...

A grilled cheese sandwich is more than just two pieces of bread with cheese, it can be a life-changing moment when done right. Just ask Percy. And there's more than one way to prepare the classic grilled cheese sandwich, just search the internet. From using sourdough with a blend of Cheddar, Swiss, and Provolone topped with grated Parmesan to a simple and easy sandwich with Monterey Jack and Cheddar on white bread. A quick raid on the fridge revealed some pretty good possibilities with Arla Cheese and Arla Spreadable Butter, made with 100% all-natural ingredients, and some whole wheat bread. Time to bring out the old reliable cast-iron griddle...

First, you need to prep the cast iron griddle and warm it up on low heat. Add a few dabs of butter and let it melt to coat the griddle evenly. Then, spread some butter on each slice of the whole wheat bread (or any bread), but spread it on both sides, back to back. Gently lay the buttered slices of bread on the griddle, and add your cheese. Two slices of Arla Cheddar, one slice of Arla Emmental, and one slice of Arla Gouda cheese should do the trick for a triple cheese classic. You can never have too much of a good thing, and this is definitely one of those good things. Once the bottoms of the buttered sliced bread are grilled, cap the bread with cheese with the other slice of bread and flip it for another 3-to-5 minutes for that lightly crisp toasted finish and watch the cheese melt.

And it's done. Slice the bread diagonally just the way Chef Carl Casper did it in the film, or just go ahead and take one big greedy bite. That crunchy bite, the richness of the melted cheese blend and that buttery finish, just perfect. Make another pair, pour another cup of coffee, press play and watch the rest of the film for the hundredth time...
