Flavors of Boracay: Eat Good, Feel Good at Nonie's

Feeling good is often associated with a healthy lifestyle and a positive attitude, but there are certain dishes that have the same effect. Ready to eat good and feel good? 


When in Boracay, there's one name that remains top-of-mind for healthy options, and that's Nonie's. And with the timely and recent re-opening of the island paradise, eating good and feeling good is back at Boracay...


What started as a passion project for Patrick and Shria Florencio, advocates of delicious, healthy and sustainable cuisine, has since become one of Boracay's favorite dining destinations. Showcasing local and ethically sourced produce transformed in a fusion style Filipino-inspired menu, Nonie's has taken the lead in a food movement emphasizing healthy food. And healthy food doesn't have to be boring. I first met the dynamic couple behind Nonie's at a dinner tribute to Anthony Bourdain last year at U Hotels (more on my post at A Cook's Tour With No Reservations To Parts Unknown: Chef Decker Gokioco's Chef's Table Tribute To Anthony Bourdain At U Hotels) during their pop-up in Manila. During the much talked about closure, embattled business owners from Boracay headed to Manila for pop-ups to provide some income for their employees. But Boracay's back, and ready for summer (for more on Boracay's re-opening, see my previous post on my travel blog, Summer's Back on Track at Boracay's White House Beach Resort). And Nonie's inspired cuisine shines once more at Hue Hotel and Resorts in Station X...


Start your feast with Nonie's refreshing Ceviche (P 320) with the day's freshest catch draped in a spicy coconut vinaigrette served with lavosh...


...followed by the flavorful Tofu Salad (P 280), a vegan dish with grilled tofu, toasted chickpeas, apples and seasonal greens drizzled with a tart calamansi dressing. And right off the bat, Nonie's proves in just two dishes that healthy food doesn't have to be bland or even boring. The flavors are clean and fresh, punctuated by sweet notes and the soothing heat of chili in a vibrant palette of colorful flavors. 


For the sumptuous mains, the Grain Bowls at Nonie's are not to be missed with tasty offerings like the Beef & Kimchi (P 350) with fork-tender beef brisket hash, soft-boiled egg, Nonie's spicy kimchi, and sorghum sprinkled with sesame seeds...


...and the Chicken Longganisa (P 350) with homemade chicken breast sausages topped with soft-boiled egg, garden-fresh greens, mango tomato salsa and adlai (for more on the wonder grain adlai, see my earlier post, Bringing The Farm to Poblacion: Hineleban Farms at Backwell by BBZ).


And there's more. Nonie's savory Chicken and Pork Adobo (P 420) with grilled chicken adobo, 72-hour crispy pork belly, soft boiled egg, Cavite-style adobo rice made with organic black rice and topped with crisp candied garlic is one of their many bestsellers. One look and bite, and you know why.

From refreshing Seafood Salad to Chicken Salad, All-Day Brunch with Pineapple Pandan Pancakes, Mushroom Benedict and Pork & Beans to Tuna Pan de Sal and Mango Banana Smoothie Bowls, Nonie's takes the familiar and transforms it for a healthier option without missing out on the flavor. Just like the Bistek Tagalog (P 440)... 


But it's the Fish and Prawn Curry (P 440) that had me from that very first bite. Made with catch of the day fish and succulent prawns slathered in a homemade curry laid on organic black rice topped with fresh greens, the Fish and Prawn Curry leaves you satisfied without feeling heavy. That's the feel good part with Nonie's inventive cuisine.


And the flavors are just so spot on, from the briny sweetness of the fresh seafood to the tart and creamy notes of the curry capped by the subtle nutty hints of the organic black rice all in one dish.
