Afternoons at Max's...

Maybe it's the place in the old Scout neighborhood that makes it so special. Or the service. And the food. Whatever it is, it all comes together perfectly in one afternoon of familiar and comforting local flavors at Max's...

Located at Scout Tuason in Quezon City, this branch has probably seen more celebrations than any of their other outlets, and why not, it just has a cozy vibe that will make you feel right at home the moment you enter. Hey, it's Max's Restaurant, the house that fried chicken built after all, an institution that's become part of many Filipino celebrations for generations (for more on Max's, see my previous posts, Every Day To The Max with Max's New Adobo Ribs and Beef Salpicao on their new dishes and After 71 Years And Counting, Still Sarap To The Bones at Max's Restaurant on their all-time favorites and signature dishes from three years ago). But it's not just lunch or dinner that makes Max's everyone's go to place, an afternoon snack or merienda also makes the cut...

Take the Fresh Lumpiang Ubod (P 90), a soft egg crepe spring roll stuffed with julienned slices of coconut heart with pork, shrimp and crab meat drizzled with a sweet sauce and topped with peanuts. The fresh and clean flavors are complemented by the sweet sauce while the peanuts add both flavor and texture. It's a light yet complete package, opening up your palate for the next course...

...the popular Pancit Canton (P 149 Small/P 239 Regular). Loaded with shrimp, pork and vegetables on soft egg noodles, one bite just takes you back to simpler, uncomplicated times. And after all these years, Max's Pancit Canton still leaves an endearing flavor that lingers.

But if you're really hungry, go for Max's Sarap to the Bowls Rice Bowls like the Kare-Kare (P 249), a hearty beef and ox-tripe stew simmered in a thick peanut sauce on steamed white rice. And the iconic Max's Fried Chicken? That's for take-out, for dinner later at home.
