Sisig On My Mind

It's often said that some of the best dishes in the world come from humble origins. I can think of several examples, but what comes top of mind at the moment is no other than...Sisig.

The story of Sisig is an interesting one, characterized by ingenuity, resourcefulness, and creative brilliance.  And it is not surprising that Sisig originated from Pampanga, one of the country's culinary regions. Made with chopped pig's cheeks, jowls and ears, Sisig is all about maximizing cheaper cuts of meat.

What's in the Fridge...Potato Salad

A few medium sized potatoes, some carrots, sugar beets and celery. Sounds like another fridge raid...

Throw in a chicken breast and boil until it's done, then boil the potatoes, carrots and beets. Once done, simply shred the chicken breast, cube the potatoes and slice up the carrots and beets.

Food News: McCormick Launches New Bread Spread Line

Great flavors in a convenient tube. Very cool. McCormick formally introduces a new product line in an event dubbed "Goodbye Bland, Hello Flavorful" last July 24 at Top Shelf. The innovative squeezable tube packaging is handy, providing flavors in a flash, without the mess. Great idea.

The new line is a cool new concept in enhancing the flavors of any dish or snack, by simply squeezing a tube. McCormick Bread Spreads are available in the following flavors:

Side Views: Awesome Sights and Flavors at the Tillamook Cheese Factory

I was surprised to find Tillamook Red Cheddar at S&R the other day, and it immediately brought back memories of my trip to Oregon almost three years ago. And when it comes to cheese, fudge and ice cream, Tillamook is definitely on my top ten list. I remember visiting the Tillamook Cheese Factory, and the sights and flavors remain one of the best memories of that trip

Just an hour and half's drive from Portland, it's a relaxed and leisurely drive. Simply set your GPS and you're on your way.

What's in the Pantry...Valor Cao

Nothing like a cup of hot chocolate. The thick and creamy kind, like Spanish hot chocolate. And my niece brings back another taste of Spain from her recent trip. Very cool.

Valor Cao, specially made to go with churros.

Side Views: Whiteout at Maroon Bells

The heavy snowfall the previous night continued , bringing in a grey morning, and chances of seeing the red rocks at Maroon Bells seemed to fade away. But then, a break in the clouds slowly revealed the famed colors, and for a few minutes, Maroon Bells bares herself in a cold winter morning.

Located just 12 miles from Aspen, Maroon Bells is an iconic Colorado landmark, and just seeing the signature red rocks even for a few minutes remains one of the highlights of my trip almost four years ago. The composition of the Bells is made up mostly with sedimentary mudstone giving it a distinctive reddish shade.

What's in the Pantry...Casademont Fuet Extra

La Furia Roja's dominance in the recent EuroCup Finals calls for a celebration. With a convincing 4-0 victory over the Azzuris, clearly a statement for the defending World Cup and now two-time EuroCup Champions. And what better way to celebrate the championship than with a little taste of Spain.

I've been saving this little baby for a special occasion, and the EuroCup finals seemed like a perfect reason. Casademont's Fuet Extra, a dried salami marbled with enough fat that literally melts in your mouth. Rich with a buttery mouth feel, not too salty, just perfect.

Don Limone: A Taste of the Mediterranean

Grey skies hovered above, signs of a late afternoon rain. On a long drive south of the metro, I was looking forward to unique Mediterranean flavors, a taste of sunshine on a cloudy afternoon. A couple of days earlier, I was invited to sample Don Limone's Mediterranean cuisine including their signature dishes.

Just five months old, Don Limone offers a wide range of Italian and Mediterranean dishes prepared by husband and wife chefs Allen and Betty. Allen, a native New Yorker, used to be with the hotel industry, and was posted in several countries where he met Betty. And together they share their passion for Meditteranean flavors and classic Italian dishes daily at Don Limone. And being a native New Yorker, Allen includes a wide selection of cheesecakes as well.
